Montessori Vs. Daycare: Setting Their Own Pace

“Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.” – Maria Montessori

One difference of the Montessori approach compared to typical daycare environments has to do with allowing the children to set their own learning pace. Typical daycare providers have a schedule that was developed for all the children in the group to follow. These adult led schedules don’t take into account if children are engaged in the activity or the individual learning pace of the children. In contrast, the Montessori approach is centered on allowing children to set their own learning pace to internalize information. Even as early as 12 months, children are encouraged to explore at their own pace and choose their own activities. With one-on-one instruction and individual learning plans, each child advances through the curriculum as they are ready.
