Grace & Courtesy in Preschool: Meals

Meals are an important part of the day; warm opportunities for families to spend time together. Good manners (Grace & Courtesy) go a long way toward making meal times an especially pleasant experience. It is important to remember that children want to do what the adults do. Following a few basic Montessori techniques will build a strong foundation:

Model Expected Behavior — Be mindful of your own mealtime behavior (tone of voice, conversation topics, etc). Your preschool child can and wants to follow your lead.

Allow for a Relaxed Meal — Make sure your child feels an important part of the mealtime conversation. Let them know you value their help and presence and are not in a rush.

Be Specific With Praise – Instead of saying “your manners at dinner were excellent”, try “I really appreciate how you kept your mouth closed while you chewed”.

Grace & Courtesy to Practice at the Table:
–Waiting for everyone to be ready before beginning
–Taking a small portion to taste first.
–Talking with those sitting around the table.
–Thanking those who prepared the meal.
–Waiting until everyone is finished before leaving the table
–Asking “May I be excused?”
–Helping with the clearing away and clean up
